United Way Increases Annual Funding By Nearly 50% To 85 Nonprofits And Collaboratives
United Way of the Greater Triangle today announced plans to invest $5.075M in 85 local nonprofit organizations and collaboratives over the next fiscal year in support of its mission to eradicate poverty and increase social mobility through the power of partnerships. These community investments represent a 43.7% year-over-year increase in funding grants as well as a 64% increase in grants awarded to BIPOC-led organizations. A full list of awarded grantees can be found below.
The $5.075M allocation also includes $250,000 earmarked for United Way’s 10 to Watch initiative, which will invest $50,000 over two years in 10 local nonprofits with leaders who are Black, Latinx, and/or Woman. The organization is currently conducting interviews to determine those 10 leaders and will make that announcement this summer.
The results of this funding process represent the next phase of United Way’s strategic commitment to charity and justice, supporting the solutions that combat the immediate effects of poverty while also focusing on long-term solutions that attack the root causes. Through new funding opportunities including the Anti-Racism Accelerator (ARC-Celerator) and Anti-Racist Capacity Building grants, it also intentionally addresses how systemic racism perpetuates the cycle of poverty in the Triangle.
Grantees include nationally-known organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs of Wake County, Special Olympics NC, and YMCA of the Triangle as well as locally-known organizations like Marbles Kids Museum, Equity Before Birth, and The Green Chair Project. Grants are awarded within each of United Way’s pillars and extended focus areas.
- Healthy Families:
- $2,420,000 total annual investment
- Focus areas include affordable housing, food security, health (including mental health), and safety.
- Cradle To Career:
- $1,980,000 total annual investment
- Supports individuals and families from birth to and through the workforce
- Equity In Leadership:
- $675,000 total annual investment
- Focuses on amplifying under-represented leaders and preparing the Triangle for the inevitable success of marginalized communities. Grants within this pillar include the established 10 to Watch initiative as well as new grant opportunities like ARC-Celerator and Anti-Racist Capacity Building.
