Gina Miller is a Nationwide Claims Director By Profession and a United Way Champion By Choice

United Way of the Greater Triangle is on a mission to eradicate poverty and increase social mobility. That lofty goal wouldn’t be possible without the power of partnerships.

No one knows this better than, well, our partners: the champions who tirelessly lead fundraising campaigns and raise awareness in their workplaces and communities, the employers matching donations so that more money can go back into the community, and our 84 nonprofit partners doing the on-the-ground work needed to turn this dream into a reality.

Gina Miller knows the power of partnerships better than many. She’s a nearly 17-year veteran of Nationwide, one of the largest insurance and financial services companies in the world, and when she’s not reviewing non-injury related insurance claims in her role as Claims Director, she’s helping to lead the company’s United Way Committee.

This month, we chatted with Gina about her commitment to community, Nationwide’s culture of philanthropy, and the little acts that anyone can do to make a difference.

1. What’s your role at Nationwide and what do you love most about working there?

I’m currently a Claims Director for Nationwide. April 2020 will make 17 years with the company for me. What I love most about Nationwide…definitely the people and the commitment to our values and our community.

2. Why is giving back to the Greater Triangle community important to you?

I feel that it’s important to try to lift up others and to make a difference, especially with our youth and with those in need.  The Greater Triangle is where I live and work and want to see us make daily strides in improving the quality of life. I know that it only takes a small effort to make a huge impact in the lives of others, so if I can make a difference in one person’s life, then I consider that a success.

3. Why do you serve on the United Way Committee at Nationwide?

Serving on the United Way Committee at work was a natural way to combine my passion for community involvement with my colleagues at Nationwide. I have volunteered for service activities through Nationwide’s United Way campaign for over 10 years, however, I have been a part of the steering committee for four years.

4. What has been one of your favorite ways that you’ve engaged your co-workers in Nationwide’s United Way campaign?

Here in Raleigh, we have found some awesome and innovative ways to raise awareness of the needs within our community and how everyone can be a part of the solution!  As a part of the 2019 campaign, we held an indoor mini-golf tournament in our office! The “holes” were sponsored by local nonprofit organizations that were able to provide detail on their missions to participants as they maneuvered the course.

5. What has been your favorite volunteer experience with United Way?

One of the most meaningful events to me was the supply drive and working on-site at the events that we held to support the residents of Eastern N.C. in the wake of Hurricane Florence.  I’m originally from New Bern, North Carolina so to be able to not only be a part of delivering on the Nationwide Promise but to also be a part of the humanitarian relief efforts in my hometown… all as a part of my “day’s work”… was amazing!

6. What other causes are you passionate about?

Volunteer work has always been a passion of mine because I believe that it is my responsibility to try to leave this world better for the next generation. Upon moving to the Triangle in 2001, I began volunteering with youth and educational organizations in the Durham area such as the Back to School Youth Fair. Due to the impact of breast cancer within my family, I spent 9 years volunteering with the local Susan G. Komen affiliate as a member of the Race for the Cure Planning Committee and later as the 2014 Race Vice-Chair. Additionally, outside of United Way activities, I also spend time with volunteer activities at the Ronald McDonald House.

7. What is your biggest dream for the Greater Triangle?

Through both personal experience and my work in claims at Nationwide, I know first-hand that life can change in an instant!  My biggest dream is that all of the residents of the Greater Triangle understand how easy it is to make an impact on others. A simple smile to a stranger can change their entire day!
