The Tuesday after Thanksgiving isn’t just another day to enjoy leftovers, it’s also a chance to break from the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday by celebrating the only annual holiday dedicated to giving back where it’s needed most.
Started seven years ago, #GivingTuesday has become a global celebration of charitable giving that harnesses the power of social media to spread real change in communities all over the world. In 2018 alone, the movement raised $380M in online donations in more than 150 countries!
This #GivingTuesday, United Way of the Greater Triangle has a goal of raising $5,000 to support our mission of eradicating poverty and increasing social mobility for our neighbors in need. And thanks to a generous grant from Microsoft, every donation made for #GivingTuesday will be doubled up to $5,000!
Here’s how you can donate to support United Way of the Greater Triangle on Tuesday, December 3:
Your donation will help United Way’s funded partners provide students with the afterschool and out-of-school supports they need to break the cycle of poverty as adults.
More than 80% of students from families experiencing poverty will lose reading skills each summer. This “summer slide” for younger students is an early predictor of high school drop-out and college attendance rates. Without educational support, these students are less likely to find good-paying jobs as adults and break the cycle of poverty for future generations.
World Relief Durham, a United Way-funded partner, has a summer camp that’s designed to prevent just that. Last summer, 120 kids attended the camp. Many of these students were born in different countries so they’re having to overcome cultural and educational obstacles.
Thanks to support from donors like you, United Way was able to provide World Relief Durham with a $25,000 grant this year. That grant was able to ensure that all 120 kids who attended this year’s camp could avoid summer learning loss. It will also be able to help another 80 students with their academic performance during the school year.
World Relief Durham is just one example of an organization going above and beyond to provide students with the early education, afterschool, and out-of-school supports they need to thrive. With your help, we can do so much more.
When you support United Way of the Greater Triangle for #GivingTueday, you’re not just providing educational and workforce opportunities for our next generation of leaders. You’re supporting the continuum of services that our neighbors need to thrive.
