United Way of the Greater Announces Plans for MLK Day of Service 2019

United Way of the Greater Triangle (UWGT) will commemorate 2019 MLK Day of Service through multiple events throughout the Triangle.  We invite the community to join us as we sponsor and support the following events:

Triangle Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee Events

– UWGT is a major sponsor and supporter of the Committee’s events.  The theme of 2019’s commemoration is “Our Time, Our Stand, Our Destiny”.  Events include:

  • 39th Annual MLK, Jr. Triangle Interfaith Prayer Breakfast – The breakfast will be at the Sheraton Imperial in RTP from 7:00 – 9:00 am.  David Crabtree will be the keynote speaker and UWGT will join with two thousand members of the community in this opportunity for celebration and commemoration. Volunteer opportunities to serve as hosts at the breakfast are available. Details for sign-up will be posted soon.
  • 39th Annual MLK Memorial March – The March will begin at 11:00 am in downtown Raleigh.  The gathering begins at 10 am at 101 Edenton Street and proceeds to the Duke Energy Center.
  • Noon Day Program – The Committee will be holding its annual ‘Noon-day Event’ at the Duke Energy Center immediately following the March.

Book Harvest ‘Dream Big’ Festival

– UWGT is a presenting sponsor of this festival.  Over 600 members of the community will gather at Durham Central Park to help collect, sort and prepare books while enjoying music, food trucks, mascots and other entertainment.  Over 43,000 books were collected at last year’s festival.  There are two ways that community volunteers can be involved:

  • Bring books to the festival event which will take place from 1:00 – 4:00 pm.
  • Corporate partners and other organizations can hold a book drive leading up to the ‘Dream Big’ festival and drop their donations off on the day of the event.

Visit Book Harvest for details on both of the above opportunities.

Corporate Partner Engagement

– UWGT will be engaging 500+ employees from corporate partner organizations in volunteer opportunities at their respective sites and at community events.

Agency Partner and Community Volunteer Opportunities

– We are encouraging the community to support our agency partners and other community organizations by filling their volunteer needs.  Visit our volunteer portal to find available opportunities with our partner and community organizations.

Living United means that we never go it alone and our MLK, Jr. celebration is no exception. Thanks to everyone who is working so tirelessly to make this event possible. A special thank you to the Triangle MLK, Jr. Committee, our hundreds of corporate donors and thousands of individual donors, and to Wells Fargo, our signature sponsor for United Way’s MLK Day of Service activities.
