United Way to Host Free MLK Day of Service Community Reads Event in Orange County

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK (January 13, 2014)—For the ninth year in a row, United Way of the Greater Triangle (UWGT) will host the Triangle-wide Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 20, 2014.  Over 30 volunteer community service events will take place in Durham, Johnston, Orange and Wake counties with United Way Signature Events in each county.

Families are invited to bring their children aged infant to 2nd grade from 9am to noon to participate in group readings and skill enhancing activities in Chapel Hill.  The free event will bring together neighbors to cultivate a passion for reading in young children by exposing them to one-on one instruction, activities and tools they can take home to continue improving their reading skills.

In Orange County, the Community Reads event will take place at Extraordinary Ventures (200 S. Elliott Rd., Chapel Hill, NC 27514) from 9am–noon.

“We are committed to bringing communities together to achieve real change,” said Mack Koonce, CEO and president of United Way of the Greater Triangle. “On January 20th, we do this in honor of Dr. King and the vision he exemplified—that together we can bring about lasting change to a neighborhood, a community, a state, and a nation.”

Volunteers are also needed to read with and to children, help children create alphabet, emotion, and classroom word flashcards, help children create bookmarks, and create “literacy bags” containing a new book, flashcards set, and a small toy for children to use at home to continue improving their reading skills.  Volunteers are asked to register at

Over thirty other United Way MLK Day of Service projects will be happening at nonprofit agencies across the Triangle on January 20.  Volunteers will be supporting community initiatives, homeless shelters, food pantries, shelters for women and children along with early childhood education programs.
