Submit Your Agency's Dream Project For The MLK Day Of Service

MORRISVILLE, NC--The 2007 Triangle Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Planning Committee wants local health and human service agencies and organizations in Durham, Orange and Wake counties to submit meaningful projects for the Second Triangle Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 15, 2007. Volunteers of all races and ages will join a nationwide effort to improve communities and to make the Dr. King Holiday, “A day ON, not a day OFF.”

“We want to give back to the agencies that work every day to help make our community a great place, “said Triangle United Way President and CEO Craig Chancellor who serves as co-chair of the 2007 Triangle MLK Day of Service Committee. “Last year over 1,700 volunteers completed over 60 community projects across our region. Projects ranged from cleaning one of the state’s oldest African-American cemeteries in Wake County to collecting over 2,000 books in Orange County to renovating a boys and girls club in Durham County.”

Project and volunteer registrations can be submitted on-line at www.trianglemlkdayofservice.org or by faxing your completed project application form to 460-9019, attention MLK Day of Service. If your group has a service project planned, please consider expanding the project so that others can get involved. Project volunteers will be assigned on an as needed basis. All projects should be registered by December 20.

Connection Days will be held on December 5 and January 6 to give volunteers and project coordinators the opportunity to meet and discuss projects. Please RSVP to Carmen Rice at crice@unitedwaytriangle.org by December 4 if you plan to attend on December 5 and by January 3 if you plan to attend on January 6.

People of all races, ages and backgrounds from across our region will remember Dr. King by participating in service projects in their communities that will turn community concern into citizen action and strengthen our community. The Martin Luther King Day of Service seeks to instill a commitment to service on the King Holiday and beyond. Our hope is that many of the service projects on January 15 will be the first step towards continued service throughout the year.
