United Way of the Greater Triangle: Triangle Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service "A Day On, Not a Day OFF"

This successful community engagement event attracts 1,500 families, youth and civic minded citizens from Durham, Orange and Wake counties. Sponsors committed to volunteerism, valuing diversity and the legacy of service receive lots of visibility and positive benefits for employees.

Teaming for Technology bridges the digital divide for Triangle nonprofits, schools and families by providing quality hardware, software and technology services. In 2004, Teaming for Technology has distributed over 100 computers each month to organizations and individuals in need. Event offers networking opportunities with local IT organizations across the community.

This event honors the passion and commitment of AALI members who partner with the United Way of the Greater Triangle and support human service needs in Durham, Orange and Wake counties. We celebrate the philanthropic impact of these community leaders, which continues to open doors of opportunity and provide hope for thousands of African-American youth and families receiving services through our partner agencies across the Triangle.

The African-American Leadership Initiative (AALI) celebrates the rich history of philanthropy within the African-American community. Big for a Day provides an opportunity for youth who are at risk or on the waiting list for an adult mentor to have fun, meet positive role models and experience the positive difference that AALI provides for members who care about giving, volunteering and advocating to advance the common good.

The United Way of the Greater Triangle (UWGT) will be holding its Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) Awards Luncheon to recognize women leaders in our community who have made a significant impact in philanthropy. The luncheon also enables us to demonstrate the value of UWGT and the Community Care Fund. For 2008 we are focusing on Young Teen Girls, whose lives have been positively impacted as a result of participating in a member agency program. As a result, we will be recognizing three Young Teen Girls for their accomplishments of both personal growth and service to their community, along with recognizing women leaders.

The WLC has selected a focus for 2008-09 on Young Teen Girls, ages 11-15. During 2009 the WLC would like to sponsor an event “just for girls” built around topics that are of interest to this age group. Such an event could include dance, sports, poetry, the arts, health, etc. Girls will be involved in planning the event to ensure that the event will be of interest and benefit to them. It will be a triangle–wide event for girls from all 3 counties.

United Way of the Greater Triangle will host a campaign kickoff celebration to officially launch the 2009 community campaign. The theme this year is Live United - I dont just wear the shirt, I live it.

A variety of opportunities are available for sponsors: a 10K run, 5K run/walk, 1 mile fun run/walk and 100 yard kids dash, all benefiting United Way of the Greater Triangle’s Regional Initiative -- Preventing & Ending Homelessness. Sponsors receive great exposure via print, radio, television and website media while reaching youth and adult volunteers, newcomers, individuals who care about giving back to their community and are interested in staying healthy and having fun.

The second annual Project Homeless Connect (PHC) in Durham, Orange and Wake counties is a one stop event offering individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness a variety of services including dental care, health checks, hair cuts, food stamps, employment applications, showers, personal care products, child care enrollment, and social services. Last year over 148 services were offered to 964 individuals.

The 2008-2009 Series will bring community attention to and focus on an emerging critical issue such as gangs, family violence, elder care options, etc. Parents, employees, community leaders, non-profit agencies, faith communities, neighborhood organizations, concerned professionals and citizens are just a part of the anticipated 200-300 people in attendance.

Leadership donors beginning at the Leadership Circle level ($1,200-$9,999 annual contribution) and extending to include Tocqueville Society members ($10,000+ annual contribution) are recognized in a handsome keepsake publication. African American Leadership Initiative, Leadership Circle, Young Leaders Society and Women's Leadership Initiative members are also highlighted in the publication. The Leader Book is used both as a tribute to these generous donors as well as a vital marketing tool in recruiting new members and corporate support. This publication is distributed to all Leadership donors and the CEO's of top performing companies across the Triangle.
