2010 Young Leaders Society Kickoff & Silent Auction a Success!

On Thursday, August 19th 60 YLS members, friends and special guests gathered at Bay 7 on the American Tobacco Campus for a stellar kick off and silent auction event.  Every year members gather to officially launch their efforts towards the fall campaign, sharing the mission of the UW and their impact in the community with prospective young professionals throughout the Triangle.

This was the third annual kick off for the group and attendees heard first hand from their peers of the significance their partnership has in advancing the common good for everyone in the community. The silent auction, something integrated in the annual event last year, helps YLSers to raise money for their College Awareness Program.  This program enables YLS to sponsor college tours for local youth in the area.

Mr. Paris Williams, a current student at the Durham Performance Learning Center, shared his experiences in participating on the April 2010 tour via video broadcast- a warm and heartfelt message received well by the enthusiastic crowd.  This year’s auction generated over two thousand dollars to support this initiative and will go towards sponsoring college tours for students like Paris at the Durham Performance Learning Center and those participating in the YO: Durham (Year of Opportunity) program.

YLS and RTI host "Confections and Conversation"

On Wednesday, June 22, 2010 forty members of the UWGT Young Leaders Society gathered at RTI International to gain wisdom and insight about establishing and building their careers while actively engaging in philanthropy.  Insight was provided by four prestigious panelists who are current members of the UWGT’s Tocqueville Society and who were more than delighted to share their experiences and nuggets of wisdom with the younger crowd.  Panelists included Dr. Al Childers, President of Childers Family Office; Jennifer Dirienzo, Deloitte Tax Director; Dr. Victoria Haynes, CEO of RTI International; and Mike Constantino, Managing Partner at Ernst & Young.

The intimate setting allowed YLS members to enjoy personal time with some of the most distinguished executives in the Triangle, while enjoying sweet treats catered by Café Carolina.  As the evening went on panelists shared their beliefs on the importance of helping people, and provided tips on how to establish, grow, and balance a career while identifying and developing philanthropic interests and family life.  Some nuggets from the evening were, “get involved,” “increase your visibility within your company and the community,” “value networking and learning from others,” look for opportunities in the community to make a difference,” “align with a company that shares your philanthropic values,” and “set priorities and set aside special family time to maintain a balanced life.”

The event was sponsored by RTI International and the UWGT Young Leaders Society.

YLS Sponsors First College Tour with the Durham Performance Learning Center

On November 13th, YLS sponsored the first of many College Awareness Tours in partnership with students at the Durham Performance Learning Center.

Twenty students, mostly high school juniors and seniors had the opportunity to visit three Triangle area schools: Louisburg College, NC State University and Shaw University.   The trip was fully underwritten by the YLS group who raised the money during their August 2009 Campaign Kick Off and Silent Auction.

The partnership is one that provides financial support to the PLC and its students, while creating opportunities for YLS members to serve as volunteers and tutors thereby remaining engaged and connected in their community.  The partnership also provides instruction for ways to complete the college application and guidance on strategies for funding a college education.

While the group hopes to expand their partnership with other agencies over the years, members were extremely satisfied with this year’s efforts and collaboration.  The students enjoyed visiting various academic buildings and facilities, recreational sites for campus life and enjoyed lunch in a university’s student cafeteria.  In the end, students were able to assess the similarities and differences in the schools in hopes of narrowing down which college or university would be best suited for them.
