2,000 Runners/Walkers Compete in the 23rd Annual Old Reliable Run
Event Raises $85,000 for the United Way Community Care Fund
More than 2,000 runners and walkers participated in the 23rd Annual Old Reliable Run despite a morning marked with a chilly downpour. Runners and spectators gathered along a wet Fayetteville Street for the start and finish to the 5K, 10K, One Mile Fun Run and the 100-Yard Dash for Kids. The event raised $85,000 for United Way's 177 programs serving youth, families, seniors and those seeking basic needs in Durham, Orange and Wake counties will benefit from community support of the Old Reliable Run.
A contributor to the success of this year’s race is the increase in team participation. United Way member agencies, schools and businesses recruited teams to support the community. The Arc of Wake County had a team of nine adults with developmental disabilities walking. Washington Boys & Girls Club recruited seven 4th-6th grade girls for the 5K as part of their GoGirlGo Program, which teaches physical health and well-being through programming and physical activities. The largest teams were: Corporate Team-Talecris Biotherapeutics (115 participants), School Team- NCSU –Darrin’s Little Runners (64 participants), Community Team -The Arc of Wake (nine participants).
“Talecris Biotherapeutics is excited to have won the award for largest corporate team, said co-sponsor Talecris Biotherapeutics’ representative Bruce Bunyan, VP of corporate communications and public policy. “We felt it was important to align our actions with our sponsorship, and to not only support Triangle United Way monetarily, but also through strong participation in its Run.”
“It is so encouraging to be a part of the Old Reliable,” said Gloria Lopez, community relations director for Rex Healthcare. “In addition to raising funds for a good cause, the event unites the community by allowing them to participate in a healthy activity, and we are thrilled to support the United Way’s 23rd Annual Old Reliable Run, the Rex running team and the rest of the participants through this year’s sponsorship.”
