Report Shows Progress Made by the Raleigh/Wake County Plan to End Homelessness

With nine years left to end homelessness in Wake County, the one-year report shows that the group has made great strides and may be well on their way.

Formed via a partnership with Wake County, Triangle United Way, and the Wake Continuum of Care, the Raleigh/Wake County 10-Year Action Plan to Ending and Preventing Homelessness was presented in February 2005. In a little over a year’s time, the committee and community have busied themselves implementing strategies to move forward to meeting the goal by 2015.

Through partnerships in Durham, Orange and Wake counties, Triangle United Way is helping implement 10-Year Plans to prevent and end homelessness across our region. As the plans began taking shape, communities are being mobilized for change to move from managing homelessness to ending homelessness.

Six Key Accomplishments:

Advocated to raise the City of Raleigh $10 million Housing Bond to $20 million; Housing Bond passed to increase affordable housing supply.

Started Housing First grant with support from HUD for those who are chronically homeless and have a disability. CASA, (Community Alternatives for Supportive Abodes) a local nonprofit housing developer, will build 10 new units for that population.

Created “Circles of Support” for Katrina evacuees to provide a successful approach to support services and homelessness prevention.

Established “The Mapping Project” for faith based and shelter outreach workers to identify homeless camps and available services in the Raleigh/Wake County area.

Developed and submitted a proposal for “Employment Works Center” project to Wake County, City of Raleigh, and a private funder.

Garnered commitment from business leaders to hire people who are homeless.
