The Newmans were one of the many families who relocated to the Triangle following Hurricane Katrina and benefited from the safety net of services offered by our community.

Community Partners Reimbursed For Katrina Relief Services

Triangle United Way’s Community Care Cabinet recently approved $25,000 in funding awards to six local agencies that provided support to displaced Hurricane Katrina victims. Award recipients took on the challenge of addressing the needs of Hurricane Katrina evacuees while still meeting the needs of people in our community experiencing personal disasters every day.

The safety net of services created by donations to the TUW Community Care Fund enabled local agencies to assist Hurricane Katrina victims, but stretched many agency budgets. During this time, Triangle United Way brought together representatives from public, faith and non-profit services to share information and develop a coordinated regional response that would help streamline services. Hurricane Katrina donations collected via the 2006 Triangle United Way fund-raising drive were used to help reimburse the six agencies for their services based on a competitive grant application process.

The following community partners received awards:

Triangle Area Chapter of the American Red Cross $7,968
Durham Affordable Housing Coalition $6,000
Resources for Seniors
$4,500
Catholic Social Ministries of the Diocese of Raleigh $3,900
Inter-Faith Food Shuttle $2,500
Meals on Wheels of Wake County $883
