This forum will feature a presentation by the dynamic and provocative Philip Mangano, head of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness. Where Will the Homeless Live?

October 6, 2005
Nehemiah Christian Center

Like many other communities, Durham faces the challenge of how and where the homeless will live. Do we need more shelters, transitional housing programs, or permanent housing? Are we willing to embrace a Durham with an increasing number of people living in camps, abandoned houses, and under highway bridges? Should they live next door, downtown, or in the suburbs? This forum will include an informative presentation about Durham's current and proposed housing models, followed by community comment and a question and answer session.

Buddy, Can You Spare a Job?: Education, Training and Employment of the Homeless

October 20, 2005
Triangle Presbyterian Church

The homeless struggle to obtain and maintain employment that provides adequate income to access housing and escape homelessness. Lack of high school and college education, along with inadequate job skills often leaves the homeless trapped in the cycle of day labor, low-paying jobs, part-time work, and no benefits. This forum will bring together the business sector, faith community, employment and training programs and private citizens to brainstorm ways to tackle this obstacle. What programs current exist to train/retrain the homeless? What programs exist nationally that have proven successful (highly successful at a reasonable cost) that we should consider? How can we maximize regional resources to improve in this area? This forum will include an informative presentation followed by community comment and a question and answer session.

The session also will address the need to develop greater collaboration and coordination among Durham's service delivery programs in order to have an impact upon the homeless. What are the causes of the health and mental health problems that lead to homelessness? What can be done to prevent those causes? What else can be done to mitigate the problems once they exist? This forum will include an informative presentation followed by community comment and a question and answer session.

Impact of Homelessness Upon Children

December 8, 2005
St. Philip’s Episcopal Church

National data indicates that the average age a homeless person is 9 years old. Often times we forget that the face of homelessness is not one of a 30-50 year old single man but instead, the face of a child. The good news is that individuals in the community make sure that children are not on the streets. However, this results in households where “doubling up” is a norm and discovering who is actually at risk of homelessness is difficult to determine. This forum will explore the challenges of counting these children and addressing the needs of homeless children who are living in shelters. The importance of education will be discussed, including the steps that Durham Public Schools is taking to help at-risk children. This forum will include informative presentations by Ann Fisher, Homeless Liaison for Durham Public Schools and Nita McAdoo, Early Childhood Specialist and Assistant Director of Cup of Salvation Child Development. Presentations will be followed by community comment and a question and answer session.
