Marketing Volunteer of the Year

John Walser

John Walser, Consultant for The Triangle Business Journal, has served his community as a Triangle United Way Marketing Committee volunteer since 2002. In addition to serving as Chairman of the Strategic Marketing
Committee, he has helped develop various communications programs to support the United Way Community Campaign.

In 2004, he was instrumental in helping United Way reach thousands of families, children and newcomers through one of the premier running events in the southeast known as The Old Reliable Run 10k. The Old Reliable Run is one of the oldest and largest single races in N.C. The race normally attracts more than 1,700 participants and nearly
2,000 spectators to Downtown Raleigh.

John has served as Volunteer Co-Chairman of the Old Reliable Run Race Planning Committee since 2005. Along with the United Way Marketing staff and generous support of our sponsors, the event has attracted over 7,200 runners/ walkers, including many children who participate in the Tot Trot and 1 Mile Fun Run.

The Old Reliable Run has generated more than $353,000 dollars to help provide much needed fi nancial support for United Way funded programs across Durham, Orange and Wake counties. Thanks to John’s commitment, leadership and vision, the Old Reliable Run for United Way expanded to include a 5k walk event and is headed toward breaking
a record as one of the oldest 10k events in the Triangle.

2008 will mark the 25th anniversary on Sunday, November 16, 2008 and John is already hard at work to make sure everyone visits www.oldreliablerun.com and signs up to be part of this phenomenal family event!
